The computer mice are the pointing device, which function by detecting two-dimensional motion relative to its supporting surface. Physically, a computer mouse consists of an object held under one of the user’s hands, along with one or more buttons. Sometimes, it may have other features, such as ‘wheels’, which will allow the user to perform various system-dependent operations, and the extra buttons or extra features can add more control or dimensional input to the mouse. A mouse’s motion translates into the motion of a pointer on a display, which allows for fine control of a Graphical User Interface.
The term mouse, which was originated at the Stanford Research Institute, derives from the resemblance of early models, which had a cord attached to the rear part of the device, almost like a tail to the common mouse. A mouse has now become one of the must have accessories in computer system, be it desktop or the laptop. Douglas Engelbart from the Stanford Research Institute invented the first mouse prototype in the year of 1963 and since then a number of innovations and modifications are being made on the primitive model.
As a result, different types of computer mice are now available in the market such as mechanical mouse, optical mouse, laser mouse, inertial and gyroscopic mouse, 3D mouse and so on. Whatever the model may be, almost all the computer mice are similar with structure, with one or two buttons and the scrolling tool.
